Arashi, which means “Storm” in Japanese, is a new club at Squalicum that focuses on learning the Japanese language and culture. It began in the fall of 2007, meets after school in F119 (Band & Orchestra Room) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15-3:00. The club’s purpose is to learn the beautiful language of Japan and to introduce others to the culture by playing games and watching films.
We will plan weekly events for Japanese Holidays (such as Children’s Day and Girls’Day), Game Days or Culture Shock Days when we show the more unique parts of the culture. We focus on aspects of the language: Hiragana (the basic written alphabet), Kanji (characters / symbol writing originating from Chinese characters), grammar, vocabulary and conversation.
