Principal's Message
Dear Squalicum Students and Parents:
Welcome to the 09-10 school year! Although most students in high school may not know exactly what they want to do for a career when they ‘grow up’, it is important to take advantage of course offerings that will ensure that the doors will be open once you graduate. Post high school education can provide you with the education and experiences that can be enriching and fulfilling, offer the potential for higher earnings, and can contribute to an improved quality of life.
Too often, a quality college preparatory experience in the high school and access to college prep classes are reserved for a select few. It is our goal at Squalicum to make sure that the college experience typically reserved for a select group of people is accessible and accessed by all Squalicum students. No matter what you choose to do for your life and career, and what you dream of doing with your life, preparing yourself for more education beyond high school is your best plan.
Set the bar high. We want you to not only meet the requirements necessary to graduate from high school, but to fulfill the requirement to get in to the college or university of your choice. We encourage all 9th graders to take course that will prepare them for advanced level, college preparatory courses during the high school career. We also encourage all 10th, 11th, and 12th graders to take at least one advanced level course, in the core academics and/or in one of our elective courses. In addition to our honors course offerings, Squalicum offers 24 different Advanced Placement offerings to help students prepare for college and university. It is likely you will find a course that appeals to your passion area.
Although grades are important when applying for college and university, the academic rigor of our courses are also a significant factor. Please consider joining many Squalicum students as they choose to challenge themselves in a rigorous, college preparatory experience. In addition to your core classes, please take care in choosing your elective courses wisely. In addition to providing you with depth and breadth to your high school experience, rigorous courses will allow you to explore new topics and interests and pursue your natural talents.
Careful course selection is the key to your successful school experience. Please think carefully as you choose your courses and include your parents in this process. Speak with your counselors, administrators and teachers as you make these very important choices. We have confidence in you and your future and we look forward to supporting you in any way we can.
Sincerely,
Keith P. Schacht
